Donald Trump used the Davos stage to press again for U.S. control of Greenland, framing the Arctic territory as vital for national and international security and a cornerstone of American strategic dominance.
In a special address to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump highlighted domestic policy achievements, criticized Europe’s direction, outlined foreign policy priorities, and reiterated controversial ambitions on issues ranging from Ukraine to Greenland.
Trump Makes Case For Greenland Annexation: Trump also touched upon Greenland, an autonomous territory located within the Kingdom of Denmark, which he wants to annex to the U.S. “No nation or group of nations is in any position to secure Greenland, other than the United States,” he said. Explaining his reason for the intent to take over Greenland, the president said it is a key strategic location between the U.S., China and Russia. “We needed it for strategic national security and international security,” he said.
“We need a piece of ice for world protection,” Trump said, adding “They have a choice. You can say yes and we will be very appreciative; or you can say no and we will remember.”
Trump expressed resentment over what he described as a lack of support from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). “I think it’s time for NATO to step up,” he said.
What Trump Said About the US Economy: A year after his inauguration as the president of the U.S. for a second term, Trump said the economy is booming, growth is exploding, productivity is surging, investment is soaring and incomes are rising, while inflation has been defeated.
“The United States is in the midst of the fastest and dramatically economic turnaround in the country’s history,” the president said.
To make his case, Trump noted that the core inflation has been only 1.6% in the past three months, while fourth-quarter growth is projected to be 5.4%. The stock market has made 52 all-time highs in the past one year, adding $9 trillion in value to the retirement accounts. He also boasted of record-setting $18 trillion in investment commitments his administration has secured.
President Trump touted following provisions of the “One Big Beautiful Bill” as his accomplishments:
- Opening up energy plans and closing down money-losing windmill projects.
- Cutting federal jobs
- Deregulation
- No taxes on Tips, overtime, social security of senior citizens
- 100% expensing of certain investments
He also said the U.S. was able to reduce its ballooning trade deficit with tariffs and that he was able to bring down prescription drug prices.
What Trump Said About Venezuela: While stating that the U.S. oil and natural gas production has increased under him, adding that the country secured 50 million barrels of oil from Venezuela alone. This, he said, would be shared with the LatAm country. He added that the country began cooperating with the U.S. once the hostilities ended and is poised to make more money in the next six months than it earned over the past 20 years.
Trump Professes Pro-Nuclear Energy Stance: Once a nuclear energy skeptic due to safety concerns, the president said he has come to embrace it, signing directives to approve new nuclear reactors, as safety protocols have improved.
Trump said the U.S. now has twice the energy capacity needed to support the artificial intelligence (AI)-related demand, after approving private power plants.
Trump’s Comments On Europe: The president said Europe is not heading in the right direction, citing unchecked immigration, ever-increasing government spending “endless” foreign imports, shift away from affordable energy to “green scam” as some of the malaises.
Trump took potshots at Europe for doing less on energy generation, which has driven up prices.
Trump Wants To Stop Ukraine War: Citing the bloodshed and loss of lives, Trump said he wants to stop the Russia-Ukraine war. He said he would meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday, adding that ending the war would benefit Europe and NATO
